Duval County - May 2022

Throughout the month of May, the Duval County Public Schools Nutrition Department focused on closing out the school year with a bang. Some highlights from the past month include:

Student Choice Samplings

On May 10, we finished our Student Choice Sampling tour. Over the course of the past two months, we hosted six onsite sampling events across the district that allowed our high school students to try potential new menu items and vote on their favorites to give us feedback. We wanted to give our students the opportunity to choose menu items, and the favorite from these samplings helped us determine a new menu concept for next school year. We’ll be debuting ‘BUILD’ – fast, fresh and flavorful flatbreads by design – starting in August.

School Lunch Hero Day

May 6 was a special day for us to honor our superheroes! To celebrate, we presented our team with another essential element of a school foodservice superhero outfit – an oven mitt – and one of our supervisors read to an elementary class.

New Chicken Tenders

The students asked and we listened! This month, we debuted new jumbo-style chicken tenders on secondary menus. The tenders, along with other new menu options like salads made with local greens grown in an aquaponics farm facility, have been a huge hit with the students.

Career Day

On May 16, our resident dietitian had the honor of attending Career Day at Southside Estate Elementary to teach the students about her job as a registered dietitian nutritionist.

Summer Meals

Our team is gearing up to continue serving students this summer under the USDA Summer Food Service Program. We will continue to offer free nutritionally balanced breakfasts and lunches for children ages 5-18 at many of our schools all summer long.
